Is it possible for the NativeMessagingHostInProcess to be a headless 'background application'?

I'm not sure I have followed the in process and interprocess parts of this, but wondering why these are done as WPF with xaml?
Could the In Process part providing the AppService and deferral be a headless background application and do away with all the UI parts in that part of the Demo?
