I know they're much more difficult to do but without them this client will never be able to fully replace the bloated Electron-based official one.

I think there is a difference between:

calls within Slack itself, which probably won't be added in the foreseeable future (if someone knows what would be involved, please comment with more information), and
calls triggered in Slack using external software like Zoom.
I suppose the latter might be possible to do.
