Stats.app collects user data like a spyware #285
Comments
What exactly is the problem? Could you point me to more details? |
Explained here: https://github.com/jakwings/exelban-stats-no-aggressive-user-data-collection The developer lied and keeps that unconditional data collection undocumented. This is enough concern for me. |
Hmm. You might be disappointed to know that I do something similar. The updater I use is Sparkle and has a feature to collect anonymized system info as discussed here. (Please do visit this link to see which data I collect; I use the default setting of Sparkle, so I collect only the info mentioned there.) This feature is useful because it allows me to know the percentage of the OS versions, the ratio between Intel / Apple Silicon, or what percentage of users have MacBook Pros with notch (whose small menu bar area is a cause of big headache to me). And this is enabled without a single line of code, by an Info.plist setting here: MenuMeters/MenuMeters-Info.plist Line 45 in 8bf4652

Thanks for letting me know this. It's expected that the updater may collect some data about the user environment. I submitted a pull request to exelban/stats for limiting the collection on fresh install and following updates only, but it was blocked without giving me any response. :-| |

It should not be heavily recommended.
Just FYI.
